SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. — The Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture (SASDA) held its annual meeting in Nashville this year and, as part of the scheduled activities, visited Allan Callaway Stables on Sunday, June 15, 2025.
SASDA is composed of the departments of agriculture from 14 states, along with Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The visit to Callaway Stables featured exhibitions of the Tennessee Walking Horse and included an update on the current status of the Horse Protection Act.
The event was organized by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ & Exhibitors’ Association, and the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. Mark Farrar, CEO of TWHBEA, welcomed attendees and served as emcee for the event, which included several exhibitions of Tennessee Walking Horses.
The exhibitions began with a mare and foal led by Lynn Womack and Emery Sims. Hannah Pulvers followed with WGC The Tiger Lily and Sideline. Eli Cunningham exhibited It’s the Medalist, followed by Bill Callaway riding WGC Millionaire’s Row. John Allan Callaway rode WGC Ohtani and concluded the demonstrations with three-time World Grand Champion Justified Honors. Attendees had the opportunity to take photos with Justified Honors following the exhibition.
After the exhibitions, Pulvers and the Callaways invited agriculture commissioners from other states to ride a Tennessee Walking Horse—many for the first time. Several commissioners’ children also had the chance to ride both pleasure and performance Tennessee Walking Horses.
Nash Family Creamery provided ice cream for the guests. Following an update on the Horse Protection Act by Farrar, Warren Wells and Jeffrey Howard, the event concluded with a bourbon tasting, courtesy of Uncle Nearest.
